The most popular time to visit the Similan Islands is from mid-October to mid-May when the monsoon blows from the east, bringing rain to the east of the Malay Peninsula. It then becomes a dry, gentle wind blowing west towards the Andaman Sea. Because the Similan Islands lie east in the shadow of the Malay Peninsula, the weather is generally good, with little rain and calm seas. The end of January to mid-April is the most stable period, with long tours available to the Andaman Islands and Myanmar waters.
The Similan Islands season runs for 7 months between mid-October and early May. Because the area hasn't seen divers for 5 months, there's a high chance of encountering shark species from deeper waters or migratory fish. Between February and April is the most recommended time, with stable conditions at sea and good visibility on many days. Tours are available until around May 6th but as the end of the season approaches, there will be more high waves.
With the monsoon arriving from the west, waves tend to be strong between mid-May and mid-October and the number of rainy days increases. The National Park office closes and most dive cruises are cancelled but some services will still offer tours depending on weather conditions. Please contact us for more information.
