[Entry] [Descent] [Neutral Buoyancy] [Swimming] [Ascent] [Exit]
There are two ways to swim during diving, the flutter kick and the scissor kick. Fin kicking helps you keep your balance underwater and save on air so please learn the necessary swimming skills and make sure your diving isn't stressful.
Start kicking by picturing the area from your bottom to the tip of your fins as one long line. When you start to feel the water resistance use your knee joints to push the water back.
Check point!
You cannot perform this technique unless you have an image of it in your mind. Before you dive, practice moving your legs. Beginners should first try to learn this fin kick first.
This is an intermediate level technique that adds a twist to the flutter kick, when the knees become like an axis and legs are widened to push out the water.
You cannot perform this technique unless you have an image of it in your mind. Before you dive, practice moving your legs. You'll get better at keeping your balance and maintaining more stable neutral buoyancy.
Here, your body becomes streamlined as you lie on your front with just your face facing forward. This allows you to swim smoothly and reduces water resistance.
Even if you aim to swim with a streamlined profile, it does not necessarily mean that your posture looks good. Keep in mind to look slightly down when you are swimming and you will look more streamlined.
■ A Word of Advice A lot of diving off the Similan Islands is drift diving and on rare occasions we do have to swim against the current. If there are currents, check your surroundings and don't panic. This will allow you to see which direction the current is coming from, by looking at the direction the fish are swimming towards or the bubbles from fellow divers. If you are going to swim against the current, swimming across it will make you less tired and you can save air.
